Mickey Conroy is not 21 any more and doesn’t he well know it.
I wish I was 21 again 😢😢

That was the tweet he sent out after witnessing Mayo’s U21 side claim All-Ireland success by defeating Cork.
Conroy is 10 years older than many of the lads that claimed that coveted trophy. The Davitts GAA man can still do a job up front and was looking forward to claim All-Ireland glory at senior level.
That was until Stephen Rochford broke the bad news to him – he would not be making the senior squad.

So, at 31 years old/young, Conroy’s inter-county career could have wound up.
Seven Connacht titles over an 11-season senior career. Still, he would have backed himself to push on with an extremely talented squad.
Conroy is on the outside looking in, for the time being. The axings of Mark Ronaldson and Mickey Sweeney confirm Rochford is determined to make his mark on the team.
‘Team’ is what came to mind for Conroy, last night, as he contemplated a less than hectic summer ahead.
End of an era. Great times, great memories, great friends and people met along the way. Best wishes to Rochie and the 2016 squad.#maigheoabu

Conroy is a solid a citizen as they come. He will be hurting like hell inside but taking the time out to wish the team well is just a small measure of the man.
Don’t write him off just yet though.
