Donegal 1992 All-Ireland winning footballer James McHugh's wife Noreen has died in hospital after the road traffic collision in Co Cavan on Monday afternoon which also claimed the former GAA star's life.
James McHugh and his wife Noreen were in a collision involving a car and a van near Drummallaght on the N3, situated between Virginia and Cavan town. McHugh was in his 60s.
Noreen, also in her 60s, was seriously injured and airlifted to Beaumont Hospital, but Gardai announced on Tuesday she had also passed away. She was thought to be the passenger in McHugh's car.
A man in his 50s, who was the the driver of the van, was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Gardaí are continuing to investigate.
McHugh was in Donegal's 1992 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship winning side, playing for the county between 1990 and 1998.
He scored a point in Donegal's 0-18 to 0-14 win over Dublin in the 1992 final, and is brother of football star Martin McHugh.
He also won an All Star in 1992, and won two Ulster Championships in 1990 and 1992.
