Gardaí launch probe into alleged assault on GAA referee in Clare

The incident occurred at an underage GAA match in Kilrush at around 8.40pm on Monday, June 29.

Gardaí revealed a teenage boy had also sustained injuries during the incident, and added that they are aware of video footage circulating online.

Clare GAA chairperson, Kieran Keating, condemned the incident in a statement, expressing 'profound shock and disappointment' over the incident, which he dubbed a 'bitter step backwards'.

Additionally, Mr Keating reassured that the incident is being taken 'very seriously'.

He further confirmed there was 'some form of incident' but said he could not give too much detail on it without having the referee's report of the game itself.

"What I will say is it is important our referees get respected and the support they deserve when doing our games."

He added that should the review finds the referee committed an infraction, the relevant sanctions will be imposed, with suspensions of "'8 weeks or 96 weeks or double that'.
