Wexford receive massive boost with Davy Fitzgerald’s future

Yellow bellies rejoice

Niall McIntyre

You can’t keep a good man down.

Wexford hurling wasn’t in the best of places when Davy Fitzgerald ventured down to the sunny-south-east at the beginning of last year.

Liam Dunne had given all he had in the Wexford managerial hot seat, and despite some progress in the 2014 season, when they defeated defending All-Ireland Champions Clare, and then Waterford in the next round, it was always a case of one step forward, two steps back.

The Wexicans were delighted to find out that the most charismatic manager in the game, in Davy Fitzgerald, was set to join them prior to the beginning of last year’s league campaign, and in the way only Davy can, he restored the magic.

Wexford defeated Galway (the only team to beat Galway all year) and Limerick in an impressive league campaign, and this fine fettle with which they went into their Championship curtain-raiser against perennial winners Kilkenny had the purple and gold supporters firmly on their side.

Their Championship dreams culminated in a disappointing manner, with Waterford outclassing them in the All-Ireland quarter final, but there’s lots to build on down south.

Wexford have an abundance of youthful players, with key men Conor McDonald, Lee Chin and Liam Ryan all having plenty of years ahead of them, but the likes of Rory O’Connor and the return of Paudie Foley after a summer J1 mean the omens are good.

There was uncertainty regarding the Clare man’s intentions, but reports from Jackie Cahill claim that he has agreed to stay on as Wexford senior hurling manager.

Davy has unfinished business.

These lads have unfinished business.
