WATCH: Diarmuid Connolly’s eye of the needle pass for Vincent’s is orgasmic

Conan Doherty

Diarmuid Connolly is f**king brilliant.

It’s really getting harder and harder to put into words just how good Diarmuid Connolly is. It can’t be stated enough and it really isn’t anywhere near being stated enough anyway.

It actually hurts sometimes – it physically hurts – how good this man is with a football.

The possibilities he sees, the magic he conjures, it’s nothing short of mesmeric. He’s a visionary and an executioner. He dreams big and he damn well follows through.

On Friday night, Diarmuid Connolly treated Parnell Park to another mouthwatering exhibition. Off the right foot and off the left, the five-time All-Ireland winner weakened knees in the Dublin club championship as he left Sylvesters’ heads spinning and spectators’ jaws drooping.

In the first half, his right-footed pass was threaded through so many bodies, you have to wonder how he even saw Enda Varley.

Really, how the f**k? Skip to 11 seconds of this brilliant half time analysis by eir Sport.

In the second half, he moved it onto the outside of his left and planted a glorious pass right into the hands of his team mate.

Diarmuid Connolly doesn’t play it safe with his passes. He puts it wherever the hell he wants to.

His performance was that good that James Horan was raving about him.

“The most impressive thing about Diarmuid is his work rate,” the former Mayo manager said on eir Sport.

“There’s a real honesty about what he’s trying to do.

“He’s trying to bring players in, he’s found Enda Varley a lot of times and he’s found Mossy [Quinn].

“He’s working back, he’s covering back and he’s hitting a bit of traffic in there as well but he keeps moving, trying to create something for players around him.

“It’s a really impressive, mentally strong first half from Diarmuid Connolly.”

Honestly though, whatever you think of Dublin or even Connolly, you cannot deny that this man’s passing is a work of glorious art.

St. Vincent’s won the game 0-20 to 0-7. Connolly won the hearts of football-lovers again for another night.
