Any Gaelic footballer of either gender would have been proud of this hit.
Ellen Dowling was the unfortunate victim of a hefty shoulder in today’s All-Ireland intermediate final in Croke Park as Kildare lost out to a powerful Waterford side.
The Déise took home the Mary Quinn memorial trophy after 3-14 to 0-10 win over the Leinster side in which they dominated throughout as Kildare struggled with Waterford’s greater fire-power up front.
And they had a hefty dose of steel at the back too after a monstrous hit from Michelle McGrath showed the Munster side were determined not to concede a goal.
The Waterford defender took woman and ball as she shouldered Ellen Dowling in the second half in front of the Hogan Stand.

18-year-old Dowling was left winded by the impact and was subbed off shortly afterwards.
After the trophy was presented Louise and Sinead Ryan also performed a rendition of ‘Dungarvan My Hometown’ from the steps of the Hogan Stand.
