VIDEO: That outrageous Peter Harte score really has to be relived to be believed

The best score in Ulster championship history?

Conan Doherty

Injury time, the scores are level, the Donegal blanket restricting you to 50 metres.

That’s a job for Peter Harte.

The man who is making a serious, serious claim for footballer of the year made an even stronger claim as the producer of one of the finest points ever scored in an Ulster championship match.

All things considered, the distance, the time, the occasion, the opposition and score, Peter Harte’s audacity resulted in pure magic and that magic resulted in Tyrone’s first provincial title since 2010.

Tyrone edged out Donegal at the weekend in the most spectacular fashion when their little genius summoned a special concoction from way downtown, from nowhere.

Donegal are set, the game is on a knife edge and, like the Connacht final the week previous, you were expecting teams to play cautiously – make sure they didn’t lose.

Tyrone wanted to win though. Peter Harte wanted to win and, with gonads the size of the county itself, he dropped the ball on top of his left foot and the rest is beautiful history.
