Tyrone Minor goalkeeper is shooting the lights out in club football

Holy smokes

Patrick McCarry

Niall Morgan, watch out.

The Tyrone goalkeeper has made a reputation for himself as a long distance free- and 45-taker in recent years.

This championship summer, Morgan was only successful with a few of his placed ball attempts but that did not stop him stepping forward each time his teammates glanced in his direction. He backs himself.

It would appear that the apple doesn’t fall far from the goalkeeping tree in Tyrone.

Tyrone Minors goalkeeper Benny Gallen has been shooting the lights out for his club Aghyaran this season. His scoring stats are, quite frankly, ridiculous.

Gallen was playing for his side against Eskra on Friday with a place in the semi final of the Intermediate Championship on the line. He had a rough start of it as he conceded two early goals.

Aghyaran were trailing 2-2 to 0-1 at one stage and it could have been worse were it not for a fine Gallen save from Peter Hughes. They went in 2-3 to 0-8 behind at the break.

Then Gallen really came to the party. Early in the second half, the goalkeeper slotted over a 45 for his 28th – TWENTY EIGHTH – point of the season.

And he was not done yet.

As Aghyaran turned the screw, Gallen appeared way up the pitch to kick a point from play… from an acute angle.

Two points for Aghyaran as they marched into the final four.

29 points in the league for Gallen in 2017 and we’re putting it to the public – Is that a record for this year?

Ronan McHugh scored 1-5 and the Teamtalk lads were asking him about young Benny in nets. Who’d be a forward? You get none of the credit…
