34 years.
Waterford have ended their drought with a priceless McGrath Cup victory tonight but, having waited since 1981 to reclaim the Munster competition, it is all the more sweet for the Decies.
Goals from Maurice O’Gorman, Gavin Nugent and Joey Veale helped Waterford to a nine-point 3-12 to 1-9 victory over Sigerson champs, UCC.
Tom McGlinchey’s men look intent on ramming the cynical words of the close season down their critics’ throats and they’re certainly making mugs of us even in January after we didn’t give them much of a chance in our GAA movie comparisons just a few weeks ago.
But, after their first final berth in 13 years, they’ve gone on and picked up the year’s first piece of silverware. Perhaps we should watch this space. The Division Four men could just mean business.
Naturally, the champs earned a few plaudits on Twitter.
