The most colourful GAA manager around has quit the inter-county scene

No reason given

Kevin McGillicuddy

He won’t be out of work long

He might deny it, and the statement doesn’t make any mention of it, but probably one single quote may have done for John Evans in the end.

The colourful Kerryman has decided this evening not to continue with Roscommon after taking the job in 2012.

“It is with regret that I wish to withdraw my name from the Nomination of upcoming position of Roscommon Senior Football Manager for 2016. I agreed to a 2 year term initially, followed by a 1 year continuation. However, I do not wish to have my name put forward for a further year and I want to thank the executive committee for their vote of confidence in me.”

The ex-Tipperary boss saw his side lose to Sligo in the Connacht semi final this season, while his team’s championship came to a close with a unexpected loss to Fermanagh.

Those results were in stark contrast to his side’s promotion to Division One of the league in the Spring, as well as securing the league title against Down in April.

After the win in Croke Park he declared that Roscommon were going to go all the way to the top and would be competing for All-Ireland titles within a short period of time

“The whole idea is to get to the top. It’ll take a couple of years.”

Unfortunately if Roscommon do get to the top, it won’t be under Evans watch as he’s decided not to seek his reappointment for the 2016 season.

He’s not given any reason for stepping down, but is still hopeful that Roscommon can go to the very top and is proud of having won three trophies in his three years with the Rossies.

“To the wonderfully dedicated players who dared to go where others thought they should not tread, who have risen up and brought Roscommon galloping up from Division 3 straight through Division 2 and up to the top of the pile into Division 1 – all I can say I am immensely proud of you all – to a man, and I hope you stay focused on your bright futures ahead.

Three trophies in 3 years, not bad for a start! I look forward to seeing you mix it with the best as “eventually” Roscommon will be the best.”
