The All-Ireland B Championship motion has been dropped.
The GAA’s Central Council has withdrawn its own proposal to introduce a second tier Championship from next season on.
The council had proposed a system whereby the eight Division 4 teams of the 2016 Allianz League compete in a separate, ‘B’ Championship unless they reach a provincial final.
At a meeting at the Mount Wolseley Hotel in County Carlow, it was decided that the motion be dropped after early opposition from the GPA had cast doubt over its applicability.
GAA president Aogán Ó Fearghail confirmed the lack of interest in making the change.
“When you look at all of that, there was no appetite for change whatsoever,” Ó Fearghail said, in quotes appearing in The Irish Examiner. “The only area it was felt that would be improved was that a county playing in Division 4 would play in the provincial championships but if they were beaten in that they would have a competition that they could realistically win.
“But I accept fully that there isn’t an appetite among the Division 4 counties for it. That is clear.”
