Don’t call it an upset because this is the Dublin championship.
Anything goes.
And one of the most feared sides in Ireland, St. Vincent’s, have failed to make it to the provincial series after a stupendous Ballyboden performance helped the St. Enda’s club clinch their first title in six years.
A blistering opening to the capital city decider saw an Andrew Kernin-inspired Ballyboden outfit race into an incredible 1-5 to 0-0 lead after just 20 minutes.
Vincent’s, chasing three championships in a row, were at a loss.
Kernin bagged a goal in either half and offered a seven-point buffer at the break as the blue and white stripes ran in 1-7 to 0-3 clear of the champions.
And, straight after the interval, Kernin slotted home a penalty to put double digits between the sides.
But St. Vincent’s – being St. Vincent’s – rallied and began to eat into the lead with Mossy Quinn typically dead-eyed from set-pieces.
Seven scores in a row – even despite three uncharacteristic wides from Diarmuid Connolly – and Vinny’s were back in it but Michael Darragh MacAuley and the St. Enda’s men held tight and held out as the opposition ran out of time and Ballyboden clinched a famous triumph.
They now march on to fly the flag for Dublin in Leinster.
