Tyrone aim to remind Dublin of their glory days.
This Sunday’s All-Ireland Football Semi final will be a clash between a Dublin team that’s already being talked about as one of the best of all time and a resurgent Tyrone team who are chasing former glories.
In many ways, it will be a clash of contrasting styles between two teams coming from very different places. Jim Galvin’s Dublin team are chasing three consecutive All-Ireland titles and they’ve established themselves as one of the best attacking teams to ever grace Croke Park. The Ulster team have traditionally been a defensive unit but they’ve been racking up big scores as they progressed through this year’s championship.
Mickey Harte remains at the helm and he’ll be hoping that his latest team can emulate the heroics of the great Tyrone teams that won three All-Irelands in the noughties.
With that in mind, it’s a perfect time to recall one of Tyrone’s most memorable moments from their All-Ireland winning 2005 campaign. It happened in the All-Ireland semi-final in 2005 as Tyrone faced a stern challenge from their Ulster rivals, Armagh. The game came down to a single moment in injury time, with the game tied at 1-12 to 1-12.
Armagh conceded a late free in a scoreable position to give the Red Hand men a chance to win it at the death. Tyrone’s two attacking stars were faced with a dilemma over who would take it.
Eoin Mulligan had been taking the frees for Tyrone but the other contender was Peter Canavan. To Tyrone fans, Canavan was Peter the Great or simply God.
Canavan had also been Mulligan’s teacher in school before taking him under his wing on the pitch. It really was a case of the master and apprentice and the entire ground waited to see who would take on this pressure shot.
We’ll leave it to the great man to tell you what happened!
This may be a very different Tyrone team but they will be just as determined when they play Dublin in Croke Park at 4pm on Saturday, 27 August.
Can they rediscover their 2005 form on the day or will Dublin prove to be as dominant as ever?
