Most of the recent plaudits have been going to his brother David, but on Sunday Paudie Clifford made the headlines with an outrageous goal in Fossa’s win over Beaufort.
After David produced a superb pick-up on the right line, passing inside to his brother, Paudie turned inside one player and produced a deft lob over the goalkeeper for a stunning goal.
The late goal snatched a dramatic 2-11 to 0-15 victory, which had seemed unlikely with Beaufort six points ahead with 15 minutes remaining.
When asked by Clubber if he meant the lob, man-of-the-match Paudie was adamant, saying: “I was [going for a goal], yeah, because I would have hand-passed it over if I wanted to get a point!
“I didn't put as much on it as I wanted, I mistimed it, didn't connect perfectly with it. I think the wind might have brought it. But I was there anyways to tap it in if it didn't reach."
Paudie was also full of praise for brother Davids’ part in the goal.
He said: “It was a 60-metre run, probably, like something you'd see in the Olympics! It was a serious burst of pace.
“I kind of chanced it, but I was like: ‘He could get there,' and I heard the crowd on that side and I was like: 'He must be getting there!’ I just scrambled, really.”
On the comeback win, Paudie said: “We weren’t too worried at the time, because we thought it was a good two-point wind for the left-footers. But we needed the goal.
“We never lost belief, it was always going to be a massive battle, Beaufort have a number of players tha have played Kerry senior, minor and Under-20s. All across the pitch they are top class.”
Fossa will now play Kilcummin in the Kerry intermediate football championship semi-finals.
