Munster hurling permutations: What every county has to do to go through now

Niall McIntyre

There will be as many radios as spectators in Semple Stadium and in The Gaelic Grounds next Sunday.

There is guaranteed to be a couple of teams on the same points at the end of it all, and at that stage, crucially, head to head results will hold sway.

One thing for sure is that Tipperary should be counting their lucky stars that they’re still alive.

Here’s how the tables stands now.

Graphic credit: RTÉ.

There are four remaining fixtures, and all of them are down to be broadcast on RTÉ.

Sunday June 10

Limerick v Waterford, Gaelic Grounds, 2pm.
Tipperary v Clare, Semple Stadium, 2pm.

Sunday June 17

Clare v Limerick, Cusack Park, 2pm.
Waterford v Cork, Semple Stadium, 2pm.

What every team needs to do, or to happen for them to qualify in the top three.

Cork

The Rebels are in the most secure place of all. They are the only team that still have a chance securing a top three spot without adding any more points to their tally.

If they get a draw or a win against Waterford on June 17, they will be through.

The only way they wouldn’t make the top three, in the instance of them not picking up any more points, is if Tipperary overturn that 11 point score difference advantage on them.

Limerick

If Limerick win either of their remaining games they will be through.

If they earn two draws they will also be through.

If they only pick up one more point they will still be through if Tipperary beat Clare.

Tipperary

If Tipperary beat Clare next Sunday, and Limerick/Cork beat Waterford, then Tipperary will be through.

If Tipperary lose or draw they are gone.

If Waterford win their remaining two games, it won’t matter if Tipperary beat Clare, because Waterford will be through ahead of Tipperary.

Clare

If Clare win both of their remaining games they will be through.

If Clare win one and draw one, they will be through.

If they lose to Tipperary, and beat Limerick, they need Waterford to lose/draw with Cork to go through in this scenario.

If they beat Tipperary and lose to Limerick, they’ll need Waterford to lose/draw with Cork.

Waterford

Waterford will need to win their next two games to go through. If they do win their next two games, they will definitely go through.

If they draw with Limerick, and beat Cork, they’ll be through.

If Clare beat Tipperary, Waterford can’t go through unless they win their last two matches.

If they beat Limerick, and draw with Cork – their scoring difference may come against them.
