It was a brilliant gesture from JP.
If every millionaire in Ireland was like JP McManus, then the GAA would have no financial worries for the rest of time. There’d be state-of-the-art gyms, steam rooms and cryotherapy chambers in little GAA clubs in the middle of nowhere and never again would a team have to worry about having sliotars to train with and hot showers for after.
And even though money doesn’t solve all problems, it sure as hell helps when a team can afford to provide their players with a feed after training.
The Limerick man, who made his fortune in the horse racing game, made an extremely generous €3.2 million donation to the GAA on Monday afternoon, to be distributed to each county board in the form of €100,000 each. The aim is that the county boards will then divide the fortune evenly among every club in their county.
On average, clubs will receive €2000 each. We’ve calculated how much each club is going to get in each county.
Listen, €2000 isn’t going to rip up trees for GAA clubs all over Ireland. Put in perspective, it can cost a club €5000 for one of their players to get a knee operation, but at the same time, it does save a few lotto ticket sales.
Fermanagh’s 22 clubs will benefit the most, receiving €4545 each, while Cork’s 167 will benefit the least, receiving €599 each.
Dublin’s Mossy Quinn had a brilliant reaction to JP’s generosity.
Great gesture but bit ridiculous if Dublin GAA only get the same as everyone else. Not exactly balanced #GAA https://t.co/wIXtH08sWS
