Huge betting splurge gives strong indication of next Dublin hurling manager

Bookmakers are rarely wrong...

This is quite an indication.

The Dublin senior hurlers have been managerless since Ger Cunningham left his job on the back of a disappointing three years in charge.

The Dublin hurlers endured a tough year, which started off with a disappointing league campaign, and their fortunes didn’t improve with Championship wallopings to Tipperary and Galway respectively.

The rumour mill has been in full flow ever since, with the likes of Mattie Kenny, who managed Cuala to last year’s All-Ireland club Championship leading the betting, while Waterford’s Derek McGrath ruled himself out.

St Vincents club man and former All-Ireland winning football manager Pat Gilroy had been tentatively supported in the market, up until Tuesday morning that was, when a flurry of bets prompted bookmakers Boylesports to suspend betting on him getting the job.

According to Boylesports, Gilroy started the day at odds of 6/1, before he was backed into 3/1 and eventually even money.

Boylesports head of communications Leon Blanche commented on the situation.

“Judging by the demand this afternoon, it looks like he could be swapping football for hurling and hopefully leading the boys in blue to some more silverware.”

It is worth noting that the bookmakers rarely get these things wrong.
