Never will everybody be happy, especially when you’re picking a team.
“During the winter, a lot of hours are passed picking teams like that. Whether it be in houses, pubs or churches or anything, it happens, and there’s never agreement on it. But I’m happy with that team,” – Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh.
Micheál and Sean Óg, after some debate, agreed on this 15 of players as their hurling team of the last 25 years for #WeAreHurling.
- Goalkeeper – Donal Óg Cusack (Cork)
- Right corner back – J.J. Delaney (Kilkenny)
- Full back – Brian Lohan (Clare)
- Left corner back – Diarmuid O’Sullivan (Cork)
- Right half back – Tommy Walsh (Kilkenny)
- Centre half back – Brian Corcoran (Cork)
- Left half back – Brian Whelahan (Offaly)
- Midfield – Ken McGrath (Waterford)
- Midfield – Ciarán Carey (Limerick)
- Left half forward – Ben O’Connor (Cork)
- Centre half forward – Joe Canning (Galway)
- Right half forward – D.J. Carey (Kilkenny)
- Left corner forward – Eoin Kelly (Tipperary)
- Full forward – Henry Shefflin (Kilkenny)
- Right corner forward – Eddie Brennan (Kilkenny)
The pair picked their individual teams of the last quarter of a century.
Sean Óg had changes, but very minor ones. He had a few positional changes in the backs, but the only personnel change was Jamesie O’Connor in for Kilkenny’s Eddie Brennan.
The famous commentator brought Jackie Tyrrell in for Diarmuid O’Sullivan and Seán Óg in for Brian Whelehan in the backs, Michael Fennelly in for Ciaran Carey at midfield, and Tommy Dunne in for Ben O’Connor in the forwards.
There were a few notable exclusions.
Brendan Cummins, Davy Fitzgerald and Damien Fitzhenry can all feel hard-done-by in the goals.
Tipperary behemoth Paudie Maher has been the most consistent defender in the last ten years of hurling. He may have deserved a nod.
Tony Browne can’t have been far off.
John Mullane, Richie Power, Richie Hogan and Lar Corbett might feel aggrieved.
Have we forgotten anyone else?
