“Poor Colm might want the role back on RTE.”
Lee Keegan and Sean Cavanagh couldn’t help themselves when the opportunity came to make a joke at Colm O’Rourke’s expense following Meath’s defeat to Offaly.
The loss in the Leinster championship means that Meath will not compete in the All-Ireland series, and will instead be thrown into the Tailteann Cup.
Given the reputation of such a prod footballing county like Meath, you fully expect them to competing for the Sam Maguire, but Cavanagh and Keegan showed no sympathy.
“Poor Colm might want the role back on RTE”, joked the former Mayo defender.
“They way they started in Division Two, we rated them pretty highly, but then things have gone down the slide pretty quickly, and today has probably summed up their season.
“It’s no disrespect to Offaly as Meath are tipped as one of the favourites today to win.”
The ex-Tyrone captain showed less compassion than Keegan, and refused to make any excuses for them.
“You get what you deserve, they haven’t been good enough for the last number of years. I’ve been standing here watching, and saying that Meath have fallen off a cliff for the last couple of years.
“They were probably lucky enough to finish outside of the relegation places in Division Two, only Clare were unlucky in a couple of games.

“Meath really should have been relegated which would have knocked them out anyway. They’ve been teetering but they’ve now got what they deserve.”
Keegan went on to say that “it was unfortunate for Colm O’Rourke because he was really excited about that role, so he has a lot of work to do to get them back to where they should be.”
“He stood with myself and Joanne last year”, Cavanagh interrupted.
“Up in Clones he said he wasn’t taking the role under no circumstances, so I’m not sure how excited he was.”
