Kobe McDonald needed only a short spell on the pitch to remind Mayo supporters exactly why so much excitement surrounds the young forward.
Andy Moran’s side cruised to an emphatic 2-30 to 2-11 victory over Monaghan in St Tiernach’s Park, Clones, but one of the biggest talking points came late in the second half when the recently signed St Kilda prospect made his first competitive senior appearance.
McDonald, who lit up the minor championship with a string of eye-catching performances, entered the action from the bench and wasted little time showing his quality. The forward struck an impressive 1-4 during his cameo, including a superbly taken goal that highlighted both his pace and finishing ability. He also clipped over a classy two-pointer, drawing plenty of attention from the travelling support.
With his AFL move already confirmed, there has been huge hype around the Mayo youngster, and his brief appearance only added to the sense that he could have offered something special had he remained longer in the county game.
Mayo were dominant throughout, racking up scores at will as they pulled clear of Monaghan with an energetic attacking display. Moran’s side showed sharp movement up front and a ruthless edge in front of goal, turning the contest into a one-sided affair long before the final whistle.
Still, the late introduction of McDonald provided a glimpse of what Mayo fans may feel they are missing. Even in limited minutes, the young star’s influence was obvious. It stands as a strong reminder of both his potential and the excitement that followed him through underage level.
