Joe Canning speaks sense as he comments “there’s more important things in life than sport”

Sending best wishes to Davy Fitzgerald

After sticking it to the critics on the pitch, Joe Canning did not want to labour the point in his post-match comments.

Tarnished with a “gutless” description by Ger Loughnane earlier in the month, Galway secured victory in an All-Ireland SHC quarter-final against Clare with Canning playing a starring role.

Loughnane wasn’t on Canning’s mind after the match though.

No!

The only thing Canning was thinking about was how great it was to see Clare boss Davy Fitzgerald in the opposition dugout.

Fitzgerald underwent minor heart surgery this week and said “the most important thing in life is life,” in his classy post-match interview.

Galway’s Canning was similarly contemplative at full time as he offered RTÉ’s Marty Morrissey some perspective.

“What was said about us in the last couple of weeks, we had to answer that, but there’s more important things in life than sport,” he said.

“We are amateur players at the end of the day and our health is our wealth and it is great to see Davy there on the line today and that”s what it’s all about.

“We only play this for a hobby at the end of the day, that’s all it is. I went through it myself with my mother last year and my dad at the moment so as long as people are healthy on the sidelines, it is great to see Davy and we wish him the best in his recovery as well.”
