Jim Gavin and Stephen Cluxton had perfect gift for Michael Lyster on his last Sunday Game

Niall McIntyre

Classy as they come.

The great tradition of the post-match banquet on The Sunday Game lives on. Had Tyrone won on Sunday, there would have been no interviews with player and manager from the winning team’s hotel, but Dublin weren’t to be denied a historic four-in-a-row much to the national broadcaster’s relief.

On his last Sunday Game ever, Michael Lyster, host since 1984, sat in on his final All-Ireland post-match banquet. This time around, it was Stephen Cluxton and Jim Gavin who were to join the Galway native on air.

Gavin spoke about cherishing the moment, Cluxton spoke of how privileged he feels to be involved with such a great, hard working group of players.

And you’d have to admire those Dublin lads. Their hunger, drive and will to win is something special, their desire to keep on coming back for more hasn’t been matched by any team other than the Kilkenny hurlers in recent times.

They keep hitting the same high standards year on year, they keep exceeding them, but they’re also extremely humble in victory.

Gavin and Cluxton presented the man of the moment Lyster with the match ball from Sunday’s final, signed by each and every Dublin panellist to mark his last day on RTÉ, a special one for him and his family.

Lyster’s response was typically classy.

“Any All-Ireland winning football football is special,” he said. “But this one, from this team is very special.”
