We haven’t seen a save as ridiculously brave as Mickey O’Neill’s in the GAA for ages

No regard for his own safety

Patrick McCarry

Mickey O’Neill was absolutely livid at having conceded a first half goal to Niall Daly. There was no way in hell he was getting beaten again.

The Clonoe clubman did a fine job of keeping nets for Tyrone in their opening day Allianz Leagues victory over Roscommon. His distribution was good, his communication was loud and clear and he made a couple of superb saves.

O’Neill is getting a run in the No.1 jersey that Niall Morgan has occupied for the past few years. He seems determined to make every opportunity count and his side’s 0-18 to 1-9 victory was a big opportunity.

It took only two minutes for the Rossies’ Niall Daly to slam an early chance home and put the hosts on the back-foot. The Red Hand responded well but, midway through the first half, their defence was breached again.

O’Neill was off his line like a shot. Within no time he was straight up on Ciarán Murtagh

As the Roscommon captain pulled the trigger, O’Neill went kamikaze…

… saving the shot with his face

Before leaping right up to slam his defenders

He didn’t even get a pat on the back from the Tyrone boys.

You get nothing for nothing up there and, sometimes, you get nothing for something.

The bravest goalkeeping act we’ve seen for a while yet.
