Former Derry minor captain set to complete astounding rise through AFL ranks on Saturday

He will make history

Niall McIntyre

Conor Glass captained Derry’s minor side to an Ulster triumph in 2015, and this Saturday his career will take another exciting step forward as he becomes the first Irish man to play for Hawthorn.

The rookie has received the call-up to the club’s senior list and has been named in the 22 to face the Dockers at Domain Stadium on Saturday

The Watty Graham’s club man signed for the Melbourne side in October 2015 and he joined forces with The Hawks after he finished secondary school.

Earlier this year former Kerry minor Mark O’Connor made his debut for Geelong Senior side.

Glass has an Irish teammate by his side with The Hawks, in Meath man Conor Nash.

Glass’ meteoric rise in the AFL ranks sees him become the 21st Irish man to have played AFL/VFL since 1984.

The Hawks are 13th in the table and only have a small chance of playing finals football in 2017.
