Sad
Paul Codd and his team-mates blazed a trail through the hurling landscape in the mid-1990’s.
The tough attacker was part of Liam Griffin’s army when the Wexford lifted Liam McCarthy in 1996, and was one of the most recognisable figures in hurling for over a decade
However today is a sad day for any fan of Irish sport as the Rathnure man was led away to jail after being found in contempt of court by Ms Justice Caroline Costello.
The former Wexford captain was committed to jail after he refused to answer questions about his bankruptcy by a court official in charge of the financial proceedings.
The former hurler was arrested in Wexford this morning and brought to the High Court on foot of a warrant issued for him in March of last year.
The warrant was issued after Codd allegedly failed to comply with instructions given to him in January of last year to meet the court official detailed to deal with his bankruptcy.
The former forward was believed to have been living outside of the country in the last number of months and has only recently returned to Ireland.
The 38-year-old asked the court for the matter to be adjourned in order to try and obtain legal representation, but the request was denied by the judge who instructed Codd to answer the questions of the court.
However Codd refused, and he was told that he was being held in contempt of court until July 27th or until he purges his contempt.
Codd also spent time in jail in December of last year but secured his release two days before Christmas.
It’s believed that the former hurler’s debt is estimated at over €4million.
