Another player we won’t get to see this summer
Donegal’s rebuilding under Rory Gallagher will have to take place without one of the county’s greatest ever servants as Rory Kavanagh has decided to hang up his boots.
The St Eunan’s Letterkenny man has revealed his decision to the Donegal Democrat newspaper with much speculation over his future since last September’s All-Ireland final loss to Kerry and has described it as ‘the hardest decision‘ he’s ever had to make.
The 32-year-old was the engine room of the massively successful Donegal sides under Jim McGuinness, but missed out on an All-Star in their 2012 success despite being one of the best midfielders in the country at the time.
Kavanagh’s name will live long in GAA folklore as the player who reportedly had to eat ‘eight dinners a day’ according to Pat Spillane after Donegal’s All-Ireland semi final win over Dublin in 2012.
The truth according to the man himself was more like ‘eight snacks a day’, but nonetheless the legend and myth has remained.
He made a total of 49 appearances for his native county and retires with one -All-Ireland and three Ulster titles to his name
