Connacht club championship could be in for some very messy replay-induced fixture muddling

Everyone loves a good replay... not

Ben Kiely

The competitors involved in the Connacht senior club football championship quarter-finals will be praying to the heavens their game doesn’t end in a draw.

This week’s installment of ‘Everyone Hates Replays’ comes from the West, as the overloaded fixture plight of the club player may strike again in Connacht.

Corofin secured their eighth Galway SFC title in 11 years on Sunday by cruising to a 0-16 to -11 victory over Salthill-Knocknacarra in Pearse Stadium on Sunday. Nine points from Jason Leonard saw them book their place in the provincial semi-final against the Mayo champions set to go down on Sunday November 13.

At the time of writing, they know they’ll either be facing Tourlestrane of Sligo or one of two Mayo teams, Castlebar Mitchels or Knockmore. The two Mayo clubs will do battle this Saturday October 29 to decide the county title, with the winner taking on Tourlestrane in the Connacht quarters a week later.

However, should the score of that quarter-final finish level after 60 minutes, both teams face a ridiculous turnaround in order to see who will face the Galway champions the following week. As Pauric Lodge of RTE Radio 1 reports, Connacht GAA decided the best option if this situation arises would be to stage a replay… the following day.

So much for having fresh legs for the semis!
