Tipperary club’s dugout ripped from ground and blown 50 metres down pitch by Ophelia

Crazy, crazy stuff

Niall McIntyre

Goes to show how strong those gusts are.

Hurricane Ophelia has taken a grip of the whole country this afternoon, with the dug out in Ballingarry GAA pitch in county Tipperary the latest casualty.

The whole country was put on red alert on Sunday evening, with schools, universities and business’ on lockdown for Monday, and the strong gusts of wind arrived up from the southern counties to the midlands in the early parts of the day.

There has been one fatality recorded, which took place in Waterford with a tragic incident of a tree falling on top of a woman’s car.

The south Tipperary club’s dug out was uprooted from the grass along the sideline, and blown almost 50 metres down the pitch as PJ Moloney’s picture shows.

Someone will want to dispose of that dug out before more gusts come and blow it down in the direction of the dressing rooms and clubhouse, or even towards the nearby Kilkenny border.

Hopefully the goalposts are sturdier and are able to stand their ground against the powerful gales.

The storm has since made it’s way up to Dublin, with a tree falling across the road on Leeson street, but no place has suffered as much as Cork, with GAA clubs, and soccer clubs having their stadiums destroyed.
