Camogie club offer genius solution to the training on Valentine’s Day dilemma

No excuse

Ben Kiely

Love is in the air… oh no wait, that’s a sliotar.

It’s that time of the year again. Your single friends are insufferable, your taken friends are broke and the greeting card companies are raking in the moolah from one of the most basic and powerful human emotions.

St Valentine’s Day, the holiday named after a man who was beaten half to death with clubs and stones and finished off by decapitation, is the self-proclaimed most romantic day of the year. What you’re supposed to do on February 14 is put everything to one side in order to focus your attention on that special person in your life.

This can be a great difficulty for sports fans as no matter day Valentine’s falls on it always seems to clash with some sort of event. Football fans will empathise with class of ’92 alumnus Phil Neville in this regard, who has very special evening planned watching the Champions League.

It’s not just missing live sports events that can be a real thorn in our sides. Some of us also have obligations to actively take part in sport.

After all, to your coach, it’s still just a Tuesday night, a prime night to get in some training ahead of a weekend fixture.

This leaves you with a dilemma that has no viable exit route. Regardless of whether you decide to show up to the training ground or not, it’s a lose-lose situation. Either way you run the risk of incurring the wrath of someone you may not necessarily respect, but someone you almost definitely fear (relax, kidding).

Antrim camogie club Cargin have offered a fair compromise that should ensure training attendance doesn’t dwindle on today, of all days.
