A medical emergency can happen at any time but thankfully at most sports events there is usually some rained medical personnel round.
And a young Westmeath GAA player has some sterling work from volunteers to thank for saving his life tonight at the Westmeath Intermediate football Semi final between Athlone and Rosemount in Cusack Park
According to Hoganstand.com an Athlone substitute named as Cathal Joyce collapsed before the game and was resuscitated using a defibrillator.
He was then taken to hospital where he is being treated this evening.
Athlone PRO Brian Melinn confirmed the incident was a very serious one and he’s thankful to all who helped at the scene
“Cathal collapsed in the warm-up after suffering a cardiac arrest.”
“There’s a good chance he would not have survived but for the quick thinking and swift action of Dr Patrick Boland, who was a sub on the Rosemount team, and one of our subs, Colm O’Leary, who’s a Garda trained in CPR. The club is extremely grateful for their assistance.”
Special mention to the medics in Cusack Park today. Saved the life of one of our players.. Defibrillators need to be at every pitch.#Thanks
