Derry Senior Football Championship
Owenbeg is a long way from Croke Park, and any thought that Slaughtneil’s aura as All-Ireland club finalists would help them get over a first round test from Lavey were quickly punctured on Sunday afternoon.
The reigning champions suffered a shock 3-7 to 1-11 loss after a last minute goal from Cailean O’Boyle.
The champions now move into the backdoor system, while in the other opening round games Foreglen were too good for Newbridge with a 1-12 to 1-10 win, Bellaghy beat Glen by 2-14 to 1-10, Kilrea powered their way to a 3-17 to 1-12 win over Swatragh, and in the local derby of the weekend Dungiven beat Banagher 2-11 to 1-10.

Cratloe lost for the first time in the Clare senior championship since 2012 after a 1-9 to 1-8 loss to Cooraclare. The winners are through to the last eight, as well as St Joseph’s Miltown Malbay, who beat Ennistymon by 0-11 to 0-9
Clondegad hammered  O’Currys 2-16 to 0-11 to make it to the Q-finals along with Kilrush, who beat St Breckan’s 1-9 to 0-7.
The biggest winners of the weekend were former All-Ireland finalists Kilmurray-Ibrickane who easily dispatched Shannon Gaels 1-25 to 0-4
Elsewhere the relegation scrap sees Doonbeg in serious bother after their loss to Kilkee by 1-10 to 0-8, while also in danger of going down are last year’s beaten finalists Eire Og of Ennis who lost to Lissycasey by 0-8 to 0-6.
The draw for the play-off round is being made tonight (Monday).
