VINE: Mario Balotelli, of all people, opens the scoring for Carragher’s XI in charity game

Fantastic strike

Darragh Murphy

If only Liverpool played charity games every week, Mario Balotelli would be smashing them in.

It seems when the pressure is off, the misfiring Italian comes to life.

Early on in today’s charity game between a Steven Gerrard XI and a Jamie Carragher XI, Balotelli picked the ball up on the edge of the box before rifling home a low strike that had Brad Jones beaten.

It didn’t take long for Carragher’s XI to go 2-0 up when Didier Drogba treated the Gerrard XI’s offside trap like a non-issue and walked the ball into the net, throwing in a few sexy stepovers for good measure.

Of course Steven Gerrard was going to get his name on the scoresheet and he converted a penalty before halftime to give his XI some hope of a comeback.

And the Liverpool club captain, who is departing for sunnier shores this summer, doubled his tally with another spot-kick late in the game to level the game up 2-2.

And that was the last score of a massively entertaining game that finished 2-2 after 90 minutes.
