Ander Herrera would have backed up all the terrace talk and given Louis van Gaal something to think about when he came good with his first goal of the season against Club Brugge on Wednesday night.

United fans have been crying out for the Spanish midfielder to be given a regular place in Van Gaal’s side and the Dutchman acquiesced by giving Herrera his first start of the season in United’s 4-0 victory.

After a sticky opening, Herrera had a terrific second half and got on the scoresheet with a cool finish that rounded out the scoring.

And after the game, the 26-year-old revealed that he would play in any position that his manager wants.

“I am happy playing,” Herrera said. “If I have to play holding midfielder I will do.

“Last season I think I played more as the midfielder than as a No.10 but if I have to play as No.10 I try to help the team scoring, assisting and this is the way I have to take.”

Many pundits have claimed that Herrera is too slight to play as a holding midfielder but the former Athletic Bilbao explained that he can play in defensive midfield or just off Wayne Rooney.

“I think dependable of the game, dependable of the opponent,” he said.

“Sometimes when you play against an opponent who is attacking you, maybe it’s better to play No.10, if you are playing against a team who is waiting for you, maybe it’s better playing as holding midfielder. But I say always the same, I will play where my manager wants me to play.”
