Video: The longest ever shootout in NHL history took place last night

It took 40 attempts before the Panthers and the Capitals could be separated

A very unusual new record was achieved in Florida last night

Due to their abhorrance of draws, American sports will play on and on and on to get a result. In baseball, extra innings can lead to stupidly long games that leave fans asleep in the stands but the ice hockey folks devised a quick and punchy shootout format that usually wraps things up pretty quickly.

But it doesn’t always go to plan. Last night the Florida Panthers played the Washington Capitals and the game ended 1-1. However, the shootout didn’t bring the speedy resolution the NHL bosses had hoped.

It took 40 shots (FORTY) to seperate the teams, beating the previous record by a full 10 attempts. Eventually Roberto Luongo save on Alex Ovechkin ended the game in the Panthers favour.

Here are the full details of the shootout

And here is the shootout, well a shortened version as even the NHl themselves couldn’t bring themselves to post the entire thing.
