SportsJOE

The Pittsburgh Steelers will play at Croke Park.

The NFL will play its first regular season game in Dublin in 2025, marking a historic moment for American football in Ireland.

The game will take place at Croke Park, in partnership with the Government of Ireland and Dublin City Council.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been named the designated team for the fixture.

The franchise has deep ties to Ireland, with team president Art Rooney II’s ancestors hailing from Newry, Co. Down.

His father, the late Dan Rooney, served as U.S. ambassador to Ireland under Barack Obama (2009-2012) and co-founded The Ireland Funds charity.

The Steelers previously played in Ireland in 1997, facing the Chicago Bears in a preseason game at Croke Park as part of the American Bowl series.

The Steelers’ opponent, date, and kickoff time will be confirmed when the NFL releases its 2025 schedule this spring.

The announcement was made on Friday in New Orleans ahead of the Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

NFL and Irish leaders have welcomed the prospect of the NFL staging a game in Dublin.

Peter O’Reilly, NFL Executive Vice President for International Events, said:

“We are delighted to officially bring a regular season NFL game to Ireland. The Steelers franchise has deep roots here, and we look forward to bringing the game to a passionate Irish fan base.”

Steelers President Art Rooney II added:

“Playing in Ireland is truly special, not just because of our family’s history, but also due to the growing number of Steelers fans in Ireland. We are thrilled to be part of this historic event.”

GAA President Jarlath Burns, meanwhile, called the upcoming match a ‘momentous occasion for the entire country’.

“Croke Park is a proud symbol of Ireland’s sporting heritage, and hosting one of the world’s biggest sporting organisations is a momentous occasion for the entire country,” Burns said.
