Fair play lads; Latvians are rigging the NHL All Star vote so their local hero makes the team

Sounds familiar

Sean Nolan

Anyone else want to vote for Zemgus Girgensons?

Ireland is very good at a few select things, such as funerals, producing Lions captains and rigging internet polls. But those pesky Latvians also seem to be dab hands at that final skill too. The Baltic state is less than half our size but in a Ronnie O’Brien-esque move they are completely dominating the NHL’s All Star poll so a local hero makes the team.

Latvian Zemgus Girgensons is a player with the Buffalo Sabres. He’s not half bad, with seven goals and six assists to his name so far this year and when you consider he is a 20-year-old in only his second season in the NHL then he deserves some kudos.

As will be no surprise to any Irish person, Zemgus is a big star back home, with every goal and bit of news religiously reported in his homeland. So, when the NHL opened their All Star voting online, the Latvians piled in to support their man.

As it stand, the bold Zemgus has a staggering 400,000 votes. By comparison, the second player on the list, PK Subban has less than 250,000 while Sidney Crosby, arguably the biggest star in the sport has just over 200,000.

Now, if the Latvians want to get into a vote swap agreement where us Irish pile in to help Zemgus and they were to give Stephanie Roche a few votes for the Puskas Award, just get in touch, we can make it happen.
