When New Zealand took on South Africa for the Webb Ellis Cup in 1995 ticket prices were modest.
It would have cost you 200 South African Rand [about €14] to watch the Springboks take on, and defeat, the All Blacks at Ellis Park.
It was a victory so sweet that Matt Damon and Clint Eastwood made a movie about it – Invictus – and showed about two minutes of rugby action.
The two sides met in the 1999 and 2003 World Cups and New Zealand twice avenged that earlier defeat.
On Saturday, Heyneke Meyer’s Boks take on Steve Hansen’s world champions at Twickenham and the price for a seat in the West Stand Lower will set you back considerably more that €14.
This ticket, displayed on the Rugby Banter Page shows a ticket purchased for £515 [€716]. That is more than 50 times the price for a more prestigious ticket.
Times have changed.
As for the match itself, Boks flanker Schalk Burger commented, “New Zealand are a great side but in our team, there’s quiet belief that we have put them under pressure in the past. We always create a lot of opportunities against them but we’ve lost when we’ve taken only half of our chances.”
