An amazing tale from a schools rugby game in North Wales
15-year-old Ethan Plumb has Down syndrome and, as a result, is unable to participate in contact sport. This includes his favourite sport, rugby.
The impediment has not stopped him from turning up for each one of his school, Ysgol Brynhyfryd’s rugby matches and helping out in any way he can.
On November 27, his school took on Ysgol Y Berwyn in a friendly match and Ethan made a cameo off the bench at the end of each half. In the dying seconds of the game, his team-mates worked the ball his way and he raced through to score.
The opposing team had been briefed that Ethan could not be tackled. They pursued him all the way to the tryline but did not hinder what turned out to be the winning try.
A statement on the school’s website reads, ‘The game was played in excellent spirits and both teams competed well whilst playing creative rugby. A special mention must go to Year 11 student Ethan Plumb, who played his first ever rugby match scored the winning try. A huge thank you must go to Huw Griffiths and Dyfan Humphreys (Yr11) for making this happen.’
