VIDEO: Connacht players lead supporters at Knock Airport in moving rendition of Fields of Athenry

Conan Doherty

The west is awake and the west is united.

Pat Lam gets what it means to be a Connacht man. The manager speaks often about the five counties, about the people of the west, about his team’s success being shared by the entire province.

They’re galvanised on the Atlantic coast and, with men like John Muldoon leading them, they couldn’t help but buy into that pride of place.

Late on Saturday night, hundreds of fans turned out at Knock Airport to welcome the victorious outfit home from Edinburgh and the players hung around for an hour with their fans. With their Connacht folk.

And, late into the night, John Muldoon and co sang a moving rendition of The Fields of Athenry to the supporters just hours after making history. Just hours after having it sung in the other direction at them. Having it sung in support of them for years.

This was just a little something back to the fans. This was when Connacht became one.
