It’s the news we all feared for the Munster man…
Tommy O’Donnell will miss the Rugby World Cup after it was confirmed that the back-row forward dislocated his hip during Saturday’s win over Wales.
O’Donnell crumpled to the turf in the latter stages after playing a starring role in the 35-21 victory in Cardiff, requiring seven minutes of medical attention before being brought off the field on a cart.
The flanker was admitted to hospital where scans revealed the severity of the injury. An IRFU statement issued this afternoon said:
Investigations at University Hospital Wales yesterday afternoon confirmed that Tommy suffered a hip dislocation in the game against Wales. He will be limited to non-weight bearing activity for at least 6 weeks and has unfortunately been ruled out of participating in RWC15.
The injury is a big blow to Ireland as O’Donnell’s fine form had made him a likely selection in head coach Joe Schmidt’s final World Cup squad.
Meanwhile, the IRFU also revealed that wing Andrew Trimble is also due to have a ‘precautionary scan’ after being withdrawn from the game with a foot injury.
