Crucial wins for Leinster and Ulster but another hefty defeat for Ireland U20s.
Joe Schmidt is gradually introducing the next generation of Irish rugby stars to his senior side. Tonight, three more stated their case for future inclusion.
Garry Ringrose (Leinster 52-0 Zebre)
Leinster ran amok against the Italians at the RDS to keep pace with the Guinness PRO12 leaders.
The Blues put a half century of points on Zebre and had their try-scoring bonus secured before half-time. Luke McGrath, Adam Byrne and Cian Kelleher were among the Leinster players dotting down, which will please Leo Cullen no end.
Garry Ringrose, once again, shone like a beacon. The 21-year-old was in irresistible form as he made line breaks and beat defenders for fun. He topped it all off with a try and a man-of-the-match award.
Stuart Olding (Ulster 13-10 Glasgow)
Les Kiss’ side are going all out to end their 10-year wait for league success.
A Callum Black try, conversion from Paddy Jackson and Ruan Pienaar penalty did for last year’s league champs in a hard-fought encounter at Kingspan Stadium.
Black, Jackson and Stuart McCloskey looked good but Ulster’s stand-out player was Stuart Olding. Playing fullback, Olding gave the home fans glimpses of what they missed when he was out injured. Smart lines, clean breaks and intelligent kicking. Effortless.
James Ryan (Ireland U20s 13-34 France U20s)
The latest batch of Electric Ireland Under 20s may not be a sparkling vintage but they do have some quality players in their squad.
The very best player in the current squad is undoubtedly the captain, James Ryan. The Leinster lock saved one try and bulled over for another in an impressive first half.
The wheels threatened to come off after the break but Nigel Carolan’s side fought back in the closing stages. Once again, Ryan was the driving force.
On the week that Paul O’Connell retired, it is heartening to see another inspirational second row coming through.
