The man who helped destroy the Lions in 2009 is making a shock World Cup comeback

Will Slattery

The Boks just added more bosh.

There probably isn’t a more powerful team heading into this autumn’s World Cup – New Zealand included – and South Africa just added even more horsepower to their attack with the news that 2007 World Cup-winning centre Jaque Fourie is coming out of international retirement.

Fourie has been playing in Japan since after the last World Cup and hasn’t played for South Africa since the autumn tests in 2013. At 33, he is 11 years older than the man who wore the 13 jersey during last year’s November tests, Jan Serfontein, but Springbok fans will remember just how devastating a presence Fourie was in their side.

He has an impressive strike-rate of 32 tries in 72 tests, including his World Rugby try of the year effort that helped win the series against the Lions in 2009.

He might just be a squad-player in the autumn but if Jean de Villiers doesn’t recover from injury, a 12/13 partnership of Serfontein and Fourie isn’t out of the question.
