The 2009 British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa didn’t go as Ronan O’Gara would have hoped but he damned well deserved to be there.
The former Munster outhalf will be away, on coaching duty, with Ireland when the Lions get their tour of New Zealand underway. Still, he’ll be keeping in close touch with events in the Land of the Long White Cloud.
O’Gara’s Racing 92 defeated Montpellier to make the Top 14 semi-finals, on Saturday. Before that away win, he switched off from rugby by watching rugby – Leinster’s home PRO12 semi final against Scarlets.
O’Gara was so impressed with the performance of Scarlets and Wales centre Scott Williams that he made a sensible Lions observation:
Huge satisfaction for Scott Williams tonight. The only one of the Welsh starting backs left out.Must be an incredibly mentally tough player.👍

Whenever O’Gara tweets, it draws a sizeable response. On this occasion, one rugby fan trolled O’Gara about knowing all about Lions coaches making mistakes.
It drew a sharp response.
The troll then argued that O’Gara deserved to make the 2001 and 2005 Lions squads but was very fortunate to do like-wise in 2009.
O’Gara was not standing for that and pointed out some crystal clear facts. He was 32, in the prime of his playing days and had just clinched a Grand Slam for Ireland with a clutch drop goal. And he wasn’t doing too bad for Munster either…
Game, set and match to the Cork man.
Sure we wouldn’t have expected it to go any other way.
