Irish fans in awe of Peter O’Mahony after ferocious start in Brisbane

Patrick McCarry

The Munster man has had a superb start at Suncorp Stadium.

Australia put it up to Ireland in the opening match of their Test Series but Peter O’Mahony led from the front superbly. James Ryan and Jacob Stockdale did well too but O’Mahony was superb.

Named Ireland captain for the fifth time in his career, O’Mahony was Ireland’s stand-out player in a ferociously hard fought first half.

The Cork native stole an Australian lineout after only 90 seconds when he read hooker Brandon Paenga-Amosa’s attempt to locate lock Adam Coleman.

O’Mahony then came to the fore in attack as he made a nice line break and carried well after a rolling maul in the Wallabies’ 22. Michael Cheika’s men were well up for the fight, however, and Ireland were under pressure for tracts of the opening 40 minutes.

Midway through the half, O’Mahony relieved the pressure on his side by making a vital turnover at the breakdown. In the middle of it all, he unfurled a smart grubber kick behind Australian lines, tackled everything in his wheelhouse and made some good lineout takes.

Fans certainly appreciated O’Mahony’s efforts.
