Ian Keatley shows serious nerve to snap Munster losing streak

Another day, another Guinness PRO12 refereeing mistake.

Ian Keatley proved to be the Munster hero with a drop goal and penalty sealing a gutsy comeback.

Keatley, who has come in for much criticism from Munster fans this season, showed serious nerve to give his team a much-needed win.

Midway through the second half, Munster were on the verge of their sixth consecutive defeat after the concession of a controversial Louis Ludik try at Kingspan Stadium.

Anthony Foley’s men were less than impressed – to put it mildly – after a clear offside was missed in the countless video replays.

With the hosts trailing 3-0 in the first half, Ruan Pienaar kicked a ball forward at an attacking ruck. It fell into Chris Henry’s grasp with the only, obvious, problem being Henry being ahead of the play and offside.

From the following phase of play, Pienaar found Ludik and the fullback dived over to touch down.

Referee Gary Conway checked the grounding from the South African but ignored appeals to call the offside, despite Munster protests. Paddy Jackson converted to make it 7-3 at the break.

The refereeing blot follows Friday night’s contentious decision to award Leinster’s Josh van der Flier a try despite video evidence suggesting a Connacht player held the ball up.

Munster’s rage dissipated following Keatley’s heroics in the final quarter and a costly penalty miss from Jackson with mere minutes on the clock.
