“We’re just worrying about Jack Crowley the rugby player as opposed to what happens off the pitch.”
Munster and Ireland out-half Jack Crowley looks set to be staying put after much speculation over his future following a €700,000 per year, three-year offer from Leicester Tigers.
As reported by Rúaidhrí O’Connor of the Irish Independent, it is understood that the 25-year-old will stay and fight for the Ireland jersey, which he lost to Leinster’s Sam Prendergast in November.
Nothing has been confirmed yet, but if Crowley was to leave, as per the IRFU’s policy, he would not be able to be selected for Ireland and, crucially, a three-year deal would mean that he would miss the 2027 World Cup.
The article in the Indo also pointed out that Crowley had been offered a provincial contract which would be topped up by the IRFU, rather than a full central contract.
If he does sign a contract with Munster/IRFU, it will likely be significantly less than €700,000, and will be a testament to Crowley’s character and willingness to back himself.
While he and Prendergast are currently top dogs, they will both be looking over their shoulder with the likes of Ciarán Frawley, Harry Byrne, Jack Murphy, Charlie Tector, and Casper Gabriel poking about.
When asked about an update on the Crowley situation, Munster skills coach Mossy Lawler said:
“Yeah, look, no update on Jack yet.
“But it’s something from a rugby department point of view we haven’t focused on.
“Jack has come in this week full of beans like he always is, ready to play.
“We’re just worrying about Jack Crowley the rugby player as opposed to what happens off the pitch.
“Unfortunately not [no update]. Hopefully it will be imminent that we get news soon but look – as I say – I know everybody wants to know but we are just focusing on the game ahead.
“Jack will obviously be involved this week so that will be our focal point.”
