There’s paying your dues and then there’s John Muldoon.
For 131 years, the west has been waiting to wake up. It feels like John Muldoon has been waiting longer than that for his just rewards.
The Connacht captain was colossal again on Saturday as the Irish province clinched unprecedented Pro 12 success but maybe it wasn’t all down to his hard work and toil. Maybe it wasn’t all down to relentless commitment.
Maybe just some of it was destiny. Destiny, nonetheless, that would never have stood a chance without men like Muldoon.
The Galwegian spoke after history was made in Edinburgh and everyone listened. They usually do. Even when he reveals that his girlfriend visited a fortune-teller. Especially when he reveals that the fortune-teller was pretty bang on the money.
“It just felt good, if that is the answer you’re looking for then maybe you can call it destiny,” the forward explained.
“My missus went to a fortune teller a couple of weeks back. She wouldn’t tell me the outcome other than to say we were getting to the final.
“Maybe she does know a bit or two.
“I’ll ask her tonight [about the fortune-teller] but maybe people should go see that girl, she’s obviously decent. Maybe it is destiny.”
It was an emotional evening in Murrayfield for the Connacht man who has waited a lifetime to even dream of days like Saturday and seasons like this one.
“My heart-rate is still up there,” said Muldoon. “It’s absolutely phenomenal. You dream of days like this but it definitely hasn’t sunk in yet.
“I’m delighted for the lads. We spoke all week about wanting to go out and perform and do what we did all year – I think we did that. It’s been a good day.”
A good day that left the legend speechless.
