Mixed news, six days out from our clash with France.
Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt was “encouraged” by his side’s 16-16 draw with Wales in their Six Nations opener this afternoon.
The reigning champions coughed up a 13-0 lead and needed a late Johnny Sexton penalty to take a share of the spoils. Given that Ireland were without 10 senior players, due to injuries, the result gives the side a decent base going into next Saturday’s meeting with France.
Ireland may have to do without two more players for that game as Tommy O’Donnell and Keith Earls both went off after shipping blows to the head. Post-match, Schmidt told us:
“Tommy O’Donnell passed his HIA with no ill effects. He could have returned to the pitch but Rhys Ruddock was already on the pitch and doing well.”
“… Keith, he probably has suffered a concussion. At this stage, I don’t know the full story… He passed his HIA but he staggered… that would leave him in doubt for next weekend.”
Both players will now have to enter the Return To Play protocols so will not be able to take contact until Wednesday.
Schmidt did allay fears about Sexton nursing his shoulder as he left the field, on 75 minutes. The coach said his outhalf will be able to train at Carton House this week.
Schmidt says he is confident he will be able to call on Rob Kearney and Sean O’Brien, who missed the game with hamstring issues, for next weekend.
