Ian Madigan has been offered over €500,000 a season to lure him away from France according to reports

That is a serious wad of cash

An incredible amount of money if true.

It seems almost certain that Ian Madigan’s time in France is coming to an end.

The 27-year-old has only been in France for over half a season, after making his debut for Bordeaux Begles in August of last year.

It was widely reported last week that the club’s president, Laurent Marti, would be open to releasing Madigan early from his contract, if an adequate replacement could be found.

Since then, Madigan has given a number of interviews to the Irish media, where he revealed his frustration at the playing time he has been given at the southern French club.

He also criticised the club’s ambition, so it would seem that it is inevitable that he will be playing his rugby elsewhere next season.

Madigan told SportsJOE that a return to Leinster would be at the top of his list but admitted that he would consider a move to any of the Irish provinces.

This ambition may yet prove difficult to fulfill, however, if the latest reports coming out of France are anything to go by.

Midi Olympique is reporting that English club, Northampton Saints, have tabled an offer of £500,000 a year to secure Madigan’s services for next season.

This would make Madigan one of the highest paid players in world rugby.

Madigan was named on the bench in Bordeaux’s 17-29 defeat to Castres last week so it would seem likely that things won’t get any better for him this season.

With it being confirmed that a return to Ireland is at the top of his agenda, it will be interesting to see if the salary which is being reportedly offered may sway his thinking.
