Dempsey, Murphy or Kearney? Help us select Ireland’s best fullback of the professional era

Tough choice

Patrick McCarry

Three top players, with differing skill-sets and talents.

We have one spot left in our backline. Already, you have helped us select an impressive set of backs in Ireland’s Greatest XV of the Professional Era.

The half-backs [Stringer & ROG] and midfield pairing [D’Arcy & O’Driscoll] are familiar, while Denis Hickie and Tommy Bowe are prowling on the wings.

Next up – the fullbacks.

Girvan ‘The Swerve’ Dempsey played 82 times for Ireland over 11 seasons and scored 19 tries [including a vital ones against the English, in 2004 and 2007]. Helped Ireland to three Triple Crowns during his time patrolling the backfield.

If ever there was a mercurial Irish talent it was Geordan Murphy. The Kildare native made a name for himself with Leicester Tigers. Was often accommodated on the wing but did some of his best work at fullback, including a drop goal in a 2003 win over France. 74 Test caps, including two for the British & Irish Lions.

65 Tests, 11 tries, two Lions tours, three Six Nations championships, including a Grand Slam. Rob Kearney has seen it all and is only 29. Dominant in the air, a devastating counter-attacker and scorer of some fine tries in the green jersey.
